Some Thing Folk by Ligia Lewis

Cullberg presents an entirely new dance work by choreographer Ligia Lewis. Some Thing Folk takes place in a future and in a fantasy landscape – from long ago. Swedish premiere September 11 at Klarascenen, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern.

“I am so happy to collaborate with Cullberg on Some Thing Folk, a work that requires the scale and commitment they provide,” says Ligia Lewis. “Their rigorous training and focus create the possibility to dive deeply into the creation of a work that allows for bold political and aesthetic propositions.”

The dream of the almost impossible is about filling the meaning of what it is to be human with something new. To reframe all the stories and patterns we have inherited and that we carry within us.

Ligia Lewis is inspired by feminist theorist Zakkiyyah Iman Jackson and cultural anthropologist Elizabeth Povinelli. In Some Thing Folk, together with Cullberg, she explores complex forms of expression and confronts different historical narratives: What is the center of the world and who belongs to it? What does it mean to be human, and why can some be claimed to be more human than others?

Ligia Lewis

Ligia Lewis is a choreographer, dancer, and director. She presents her work on stage, in galleries or museums, through film, or in exhibition formats, and her work has been shown around the world. Ligia works with great specificity in movement, letting the dancers’ bodies carve out carefully formulated ideas that critically examine how we relate to one another.
