Mohamed Y. Shika
Dancer, on leave
Birthplace: Cairo, Egypt
Mohamed Yousry Saleh, also known as “Shika”, is an Egyptian dancer of Nubian origin. Shika’s training covers various styles and techniques, from Nubian folk dances to martial arts and street dance. He studied afro traditional and afro contemporary dance at Senegal’s Ecole des Sables and then returned to work in Cairo’s contemporary dance scene. The vitality of dance in Nubian culture has always influenced Shika and helped form his artistic focus to question/challenge the long-held misconceptions that Egypt is separated from its African roots. In 2017 Shika was named a Pina Bausch fellowship awardee, allowing him to follow the work of Guggenheim fellow artist Nora Chipaumire.
Shika joined Cullberg season 2018/2019.
