NEAR

Performed: 2018, 2019

Choreographer: Eleanor Bauer

In NEAR, twelve dancers meet in a cabin, by a swamp, in a no-man’s land between nature and civilization. Together, they bring a bold dream to life, blending the genres of musical concert and surreal narrative ballet in a cinematic theater setting. NEAR is complete enlightenment and 100% honest, but never familiar, intimate but never comfortable.

For the first time, choreographer Eleanor Bauer is working with Jonatan Leandoer/Yung Lean and Cullberg. Together they create a dance concert, a shared fantasy world. For both artists, a strong relationship with writing is at the center of their respective artistic activities, and poetry has become the common starting point for their collaboration.

Bauer is originally from the USA, and is a doctoral student in choreography at Stockholm’s School of the Arts. Jonatan Leandoer Håstad/Yung Lean has created the music in collaboration with ambient multi-instrumentalist and video artist Frederik Valentin. Together, Cullberg’s dancers create a temporary autonomous zone where they navigate through improvisation and choreography in a musically and poetically structured universe. Driven by fragile forms and strong magic, the collaboration becomes a poignant and sincere exploration of what it takes to be awake in the world, in a body, with others.
